November 23rd – Korte film

November 23rd is een korte film die ik schreef, produceerde en regisseerde in 2018.

Lucinda Spitters speelt de rol van de jonge vrouw Sue én die van Sara, haar digitale assistent. Het camerawerk is voor rekening van Richard Borgman.

OVER BLACK: The sound of a TOILET BEING FLUSHED, then the RUSTLING OF A COAT BEING PUT ON, a set of KEYS BEING GRABBED FROM A BOWL, a DOOR OPENING.

TITLES: November 23rd

As the door closes:

EXT. SUE’S FRONT DOOR – DAY

SUE, a 30-something year old woman closes the door of her home. She’s dressed in leisurely but stylish, colourful clothes and carries a SHOULDER BAG. She’s holding her PHONE and wearing a WIRELESS EARPIECE. She checks the phone as she walks off. She seems surprised by what’s on the screen.

She walks on, puts the phone in her bag and taps the earpiece. We hear an acknowledging BEEP.

INTERCUT – ‘PHONE’ CONVERSATION

SARA, she could be Sue’s twin sister, is walking down the same street, but the light seems different. Is this a different time? She’s wearing the same earpiece, but dressed more formally than Sue.

SARA

Hello Sue, how can I help you?

SUE

Did you make a doctor’s appointment for me?

SARA

I did, it’s next Thursday at 15.45.

SUE

Why--

As Sue is about to cross a street, a car HONKS and BRAKES to avoid hitting her. Sue is startled, stops and apologises absently with a hand gesture.

SARA

The doctor’s assistent provided me with several options, and this one best suited your schedule.

SUE

(agitated)

Why didn’t you notify me of this appointment?

SARA

On november 2nd, you requested notifications for automatically scheduled events be turned off.

SUE

Ah. Always notify me when you automatically add a doctor’s appointments, okay?

SARA

Will do.

Sue continues her walk, then suddenly stops. Her face clears up, like she’s had the idea of the century. She starts searching her bag to turn this idea in to practice. It takes her ages to find what she’s looking for, HER BAG IS A MESS. But then:

SUE

(elated)

Ah. There you are.

She takes a pack of SLICED CHEESE from her bag, opens it and starts eating a slice. Suddenly, she remembers what she started asking SARA. She taps her earpiece. The acknowledging beep again.

INTERCUT – ‘PHONE’ CONVERSATION

SARA

Hello Sue, how can I help you?

Sue is really going to town on that cheese.

SUE

Why did you make that doctor’s appointment for me?

SARA

On Saturday October 20th, I detected a rise in your alcohol levels. Your location suggested you spent the evening and night at several cafés, as well as the residence of a certain Matthew Resnick.

The cheese is almost finished.

SUE

So? Wait, Matthew who? Oh Matt? Does he have an STD? He seemed okay.

SARA

No sexually transmitted diseases as far as I know.

Sue stops dead in her tracks and also stops chewing.

SUE

(softly, to herself)

Do I have a drinking problem?

SARA

Well, alcohol is bad for your health, but your alcohol consumption is within tolerances.

SUE

So, then why the doctor’s appointment?

SARA

Since then, I have detected more mood swings than usual.

SUE

(agitated)

So you’re sending me to the doctor because I’m cranky?

SARA

No, you also have a slightly elevated temperature. Also, you’ve been more fatigued than usual.

SUE

(puzzled)

Ehm. What does that have to do with my “night on the town”?

She makes air quotes with her free hand only.

SARA

You have missed your period by three days.

Sue is so annoyed, she still doesn’t connect the dots. SARA was right about the mood swings.

SUE

Well, maybe that’s because my temperature’s been up, and because I’ve been tired as hell lately.

SARA

Also, your toilet reported certain hormone levels in your urine.

Sue is getting angry now.

SUE

‘Certain’ hormone levels? What the fuck, SARA?

SARA

I’ve informed your doctor that you are pregnant. He requested you visit him, so I made the appointment. It’s next Thursday at 15.45.

We hear a DISCONNECT-BEEP. Sue has taken the earpiece out, she’s standing in the middle of the empty street, not grasping what just happened. She drops her arms straight down her sides, the cheese in one hand, earpiece in the other. She looks at the cheese, then at the earpiece and drops her arms again to look straight forward.

CLOSE-UP of Sue’s face as it slowly turns from startled to elated.
